Nyrstar Port Pirie Transformation - Modular Process Plant Building (TSL Furnace Building)

As a key part of Nyrstar’s Port Pirie Transformation, AEP Elical delivered the structural design of a modular 75-metre furnace building housing complex process plant equipment. This project was presented at both the Piling & Deep Foundations Australasia Conference (October 18, 2016) and the Australasian Structural Engineering Conference (September 25–28, 2018, Adelaide Convention Centre). The conference paper is available upon request below.

The modular construction approach required advanced structural analysis to address challenges well beyond standard building code provisions. This included transport loads (both sea and land), lifting conditions, seismic effects, and operational equipment loads.

Our design accounted for tight constraints on offsite assembly, transport logistics, and site installation sequencing. Through advanced finite element modelling, a unified and efficient design solution was achieved using a single integrated model for all scenarios.

Note: This project was completed under AE Projects Pty Ltd. AE Projects is now operating as AEP Elical Pty Ltd following a merger with its parent company, Elical Pty Ltd.
