Nyrstar Port Pirie Transformation - Modular Process Plant Building (TSL Furnace Building)
As a key part of Nyrstar’s Port Pirie Transformation, AEP Elical completed the detailed structural design for a modular 75-metre furnace building housing complex process plant equipment. This was a major component of the overall Port Pirie Transformation Project. The building was constructed and fitted out in China and shipped to Port Pirie in modules for final erection. Site constraints and equipment layout determined the module geometry whilst the requirements for transport and handling of the large modules imposed a complex set of loading conditions that are not prescribed by the usual Australian Standards for structural design. The special loading conditions imposed by the operating process equipment are also not prescribed by the usual Australian Standards.
AEP Elical’s David Arnold delivered “Design of Modular Process Plant Buildings” discussing how modular construction influenced the building design, and the analysis tools used to address loading conditions specific to modular construction. The conference paper, which is available upon request, is an excerpt from the Australasian Structural Engineering Conference, presented on Wednesday the 26th of September 2018.
